Cleanup Fort Foote Park

About this event

Fort Foote Park is one of 68 forts built during the Civil War around the Nation's Capital. The fort is a unit of the National Park Service.  Read about the history of the fort:  https://www.nps.gov/fofo/learn/historyculture/index.htm.  This park is 76 acres along the Potomac River and some trees are more than 100 years old!  The park is home to a pair of Bald Eagles and this gorgeous spider, Sergiolis caapulatus and several butterfly species like the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.
We will take a peak at the eagle nest and see if anyone is around.  If we are lucky, we will be serenaded while the fly over the Potomac River!
I discovered this park over the summer while conducting a breeding bird survey.  I was in awe with the biodiversity around me but at the same time I couldn’t help but notice the trash, especially close to the river.  I spoke with the National Park Service about organizing a clean-up and I was referred to the PC which already had a clean-up scheduled.  All that is required is that you sign up online at this link:  Potomac River Cleanup at Fort Foote Park (MD) — Potomac Conservancy  and scroll down to “Get Your Ticket Here”.

The PC will provide gloves, pickers and bags.  All we have to do is show up!

Added bonus – After the clean-up we can take an hour to observe species in the park  using the iNaturalist app on your phone.  If you are not familiar with this app or don’t know how to use it, have no fear, Sue will be there to show you!  You can also tour the fort remains and see the cannons!
